Retting fibers

Postby dixieangler on Sun Sep 20, 2009 9:25 pm

I retted some Yucca leaf fibers and to be honest, I can see very little difference in the scraped (leaf coating), rinsed, and clean fibers from the retted ones. I retted them for about two weeks in water and was hoping for some softer cleaner fibers but they came out being just about the same as if I hadn't retted them. Maybe a tad bit smoother and softer but not much. Maybe it works better on other fibers or other Yucca varieties. I saw some nice retted Yucca fibers (soft, white, and clean) that John McPherson did in his DVD video so maybe that is a different variety of Yucca from the Yucca Filamentosa that I use. Guess I better ask John.

John says maybe it needs to be retted longer than two weeks.

try putting something in the water, if your trying to do it all primitive then try to find something in the wild that you can put in the water.
