electric tape (for survival uses)

Postby coon4492 on Fri Sep 04, 2009 3:40 pm

I read in alot of survival books that some duct tape should be carried with other emergency supplies. Now I think it can be used for medical reasons like wrapping a bandage on and stuff but I seem to prefer electric tape. I've used electric tape for makeshift survival spears and crude tarp kayaks. I've used electric tape to secure an emergency shelter and hold together a makeshift pack. Electric tape works better with wet situations better than duct tape did from my experience it also seems stronger. Still I don't know if it would be a good idea to replace duct tape with electric tape in my emergency supply kit should I stick with duct tape?

I have switched to Gator Tape as my most trusted fix after trying my first roll. It is twice as thick, twice as sticky and three times as strong as duct tape. It is some truly amazing stuff and has been aded to my E-kits at home. There is Duct tape in there too, since the Gator Tape is very expensive and not needed for every app.

My use of electrical tape in the field has primarily been while in the military. We taped everything to keep it quiet and keep it from flashing. One of the patrol preps was the sgt. checking everyone for proper taping. You could hear a bunch of untaped GIs comming a mile away. We taped the safty rings on the grenades as soon as we pulled them out of the containers. We taped mags together when we could get away with it.

That was at the beginning of widespread use of duct tape. We also had what they called 100MPH tape. It was OD green duct tape and they used it to cover holes in the Hewys cause people did not want to get into a shot up bird. They called it 100 mph tape cause it would stay on the choppers in flight.

Come to think of it, I buy E-tape in the ten pack at Harbor Freight. I have it in each vehicle, in the kitchen drawer, and the tackle box, each tool box and a half dozen rolls hang on the workbench. It hangs right there with the duct tape so I guess i use it more than I thought.
OK, what's the other plan!

yea I've got it in all kinds of packs and stuff which is why I posted this I was curious to see if other people used electric tape for something other than electric work. I found a roll today in my barn that was a dark green color electric tape I threw it in my bowhunting pack it could be useful.

I'm not familiar with this product. Doing a search, I didn't find anything except a non-skid tape. Is this the sort of thing?

Sorry B, I have made the second mistake of my life in posting the name as Gator tape. The old brain is not perking well for the past little while.

The proper name is GORILLIA TAPE!!!

As the kids would say, "my bad!"

It is available here in all the hardware stores as well as any of the big box stores. I would hope that you would have access to it in OZ. If not you need to carry a few rolls home the next trip.

It is made by the folk that brought us Gorillia Glue which is also awsome stuff made in several flavors.

ahh gorilla tape. what awonderous invention. i got some on the floor and i pulled it off and the color went with it  my parents werent very happy. as for the glue, the normal gorrila glue was incredible until i got my hands on the gorrila super glue. drys in 4 minutes and practically fuses things together. including my fingers. i also found that silicone wood sealant works incredibly well when you mold it right. i was fxing my airsoft gun out of boredom yesterday and i tried making a few peices out of it, and it worked like a charm.
