Pick a trade that is always needed like electrician, AC/Heating, plumbing, etc. Having said that, I know an electrician that right now has no work. lol When most folks don't have jobs, even many necessary things of daily life are cut back. That is how bad it is right now. Folks are having a tough time just feeding themselves right now, let alone all the other stuff that may be needed but can't be afforded.

painting, landscaping and deck refinishing are what i did over the summer. ibarely have any idea to do it well by myself, but i listen well enough

"Back in the day" landscaping, or as we called it "mowing yards" was a job done by guys in their early teens equipped with a pushmower and a gallon of gas in a plastic jug.

Times have changed. Landscaping is now a career profession and requires several hundred thousand $$$ in equipment for impressive presentation.

There is a "bare spot" through the Carolinias, TN and Arkansaw where there is not enough snow in the winter to offer "snow removal service" and stay busy year around. South of there the grass grows year around, so they stay busy.

In "good times" career choice is not a problem, pick a job and go for it, but at this point I would not know what to tell a young person just starting out. It is not just the present recession. I feel our culture and economy is about to be shaken to its core.

I was in the USAF. I went through three survival schools (general, sea and jungle). I enjoyed the schools, but I didn't really like the Air Force. It all happened so long ago, I have my doubts whether my experiences are apropos.

I was not well suited for military life. I'm not a "kool-aid" drinker and I have a problem with the abuse and misuse of authority. I'm sure that hasn't changed. I accomplished what I went in for - becoming a pilot.

If I were looking to the military now for some sort of future, I'd have a good hard look at the Coast Guard. They have a high esprit de corps. Because they are underfunded, there is lots of training because everyone has to learn everything. It's small. They don't get shot at as much as the infantry does.

i found a debt counter online that tracks all of the debts and surpluses and statistics of the economy, real fun to just sit back and watch the numbers soar

Actually it only grows here during the Spring and Summer. In Fall it slows down and does not grow at all (or very little) in Winter. I will indeed be busy soon trying to keep up with it as the heat and rain kicks in.

Mine is already running me crazy. They plant a mixture of bluegrass and fescue here that grows 10 months out of the year. You do your last mow of the season wearing a parka and then do the same for the first mow. I have now mown (or is it mowed), anyway, I have cut the grass twice and it is only April and we had snow on the ground 3 weeks ago.

I just hit it Sunday and it was already begging for attention by Wed.

The little corner I was thinking about turning into a campsite is knee high in ferns.

I'm thinking about spraying the whole thing with roundup and using the lawn mower as a yard orniment. I can regear the garden tractor for running the road and use it to go to the store, put the weed eater motor on my bicycle and forget the whole yard thing.
