Past Meetings - 1996

 

(All meetings were held at Allan & Lucy's near Penetanguishene unless otherwise noted.)


January 20-21:  Fifteen folks attended.  We had a guest instructor in for a moccasin-making workshop.  A small group stayed for the sweatlodge Saturday evening.  Discussion on Sunday on survival in this society if electrical power was no longer available.


February 24-25:  Ten people.  The group set up a winter camp in the nearby woods.  Various winter camping and survival skills were practiced.  Sweatlodge Saturday evening.  A walk on Sunday morning.


March 23-24:  Thirteen people.  We rendered down maple sap into maple syrup over an outdoor fire.  Throwing stick and atl-atl practice.  Sweatlodge Saturday evening.


April 19-21:  The theme for this weekend was flint-knapping.  Thirty-one people attended, including 6 from Montreal.  Friday a long walk and pipe ceremony.  The flintknapping workshop was led by Louis Rebelo on Saturday.  Some practiced atl-atl throwing.  Sweatlodges Saturday evening (two lodges, one for men, one for women).  Sunday collected wild leeks for soup.


May:  Some attended the "Bush and Buckskin Rendezvous".


June: A camping weekend at the Crown land camp near Parry Sound.


September:  Some attended the Cape Croker Elder's Gathering.


October 19-20:  Twenty-three people at this weekend in Penetanguishene.  Long walks, sweatlodges Saturday evening (two: one for women, one for men).
