Have recently acquired an interest in wilderness survival, thanks to the TV presentation on Discovery Channel, Canada called "Survivorman"
Want to learn to live in the wild for the sport and satisfaction of primitive camping.
Have spent many recent days searching for info on the subject and finally found your site. It is the BEST I've found so far.
Would like to know if there are any like minded people in this part of the country, but have found none so far.
Thank you for your efforts in creating this website. Very helpful, and encouraging to find someone who is not presenting his own views just to feed his ego.
Wilderness, here I come.

I've been enjoying your web site with all the different topics.
I came across some of these written by "Bow Beauchamp" mmmm
I met Bow some thirty years ago when he moved to our town and we are still good friends. At the time i didn't know he was writing these articals for you. I can tell you that he knows what he's talking about. I can't get out in the bush like i used to my health is not that good anymore but Bow helps to bring me there. He shows me new and old things i used to do in the bush. There's not many people that would do this. He's a true friend that won't brag or talk about it.
There are very few people that spend time trying and refining there skills in all weather and seasons. If you will listen he will teach you. This is his enjoyment and hobby not a job.

i just thought id point out that this is by far the greatest site i have ever visited regarding my general interest for survival in wilderness. its simple yet very helpful.
iv watched "the hunted" about 5 times within a 1 week period, each time i have become more interested in it. just also thought id mention that the tracker knife has been something i have only dreamed of for quite sometime although i am a mear teenaged male. tom brown is a great man and i must i have a very high sense of respect for him. wilderness survival should be of great interest to everyone. sorry for the long entry, but i couldnt help it.

A big "Thanks" for the info on your site!!  I've been looking for info on true tinder fungus for use with a firepiston, and I came across your writings.  It was exactly what I needed to know.  I've recently moved to western Michigan, and have been unable to spot tinder fungus for use with school programs.  I now know that the false tinder fungus that abounds here has some value, and that I need to look at live white birch more closely.
Thanks again for such excellent sharing.  As an educator myself, I "give away" a lot of valuable information, and it is always an encouragement when I am the recipient of such generosity.  I appreciate finding the info I need without having to become a member or buy a book.
Blessings! Brian

As was surfing around trying to find a good source of info on how to harvest birch fungus I stumbled here and after reading the article (quite good) decided to look around and went to the main survival page. There I was staring at Bow's picture in front of his shelter oddly identical to the one that is hanging on my wall as part of his business card and next to my course certificate and "safety buffer card" :)
I was part of the Canadian Armed Forces course that is referred to on your main page. Great course. Tons of fun. Learned more in a week that I ever thought possible. Cat tails tasted great. Cheers and Keep this site going its awesome.

Hi Walter. I love your website.

I was reading the entry on Jeannie Hesselshwert and have some additional information if you are interested. I am actually the person who called in the Hesselshwert case to the Tracker school. I was asked to by her college roomate and friend Vickie Fortino. It was a very frustrating experience for me because I had talked to Vickie while the search was still active and begged her to get the Tracker School involved right away. She talked to the family and they decided not to because they didn't want  the Park Service searchers to take offense, or feel that they weren't trusted. Weeks later Vickie called me back and asked me to contact the school. She knew the trackers would be looking for a body at that point, but the family needed to know what happened, so they could get some closure and end their fears that Jeannie might have been abducted.

After the body was found and identified through dental records, I went to the funeral here in Boston. It was a real heartbreaker. Jeannie's boyfriend told the story. They were hiking together. He had binoculars and went ahead to an overlook where he thought he would do some birding. He waited for her to catch up, and when she didn't join him he walked back to the car, thinking she had tired and returned. When she wasn't there he talked to a Park Service employee who was emptying the trash at the trailhead, and the authorities were called in immediately. The story on your website picks up the tale from there.

At that funeral I resolved that I would try to reach out to the public and tell the story and encourage people to learn basic awareness skills. I gave talks in the area, but people always questioned her wisdom and almost never felt that anything like that could ever happen to them.

Since that time I've worked with Tom Brown and Jon Young creating exhibits on tracking and bird language at the Museum of Science where I work as an exhibit  planner.

I am still haunted by that case and by my inability to convince others both during and after the search of the value of what Tom calls "the tracker point of view",

Sincerely,
Maureen McConnell
Exhibit Planner
Boston Museum of Science

GREAT site, filled with information and insights.  To me, this site was like an omen.  I got to know of Tom Brown from here.  I ordered a few of the books, started tracking, listening, sitting again...  I spent most of my kid life in the woods, but I was getting lost in civilization.  I don't really know how I came here, but I'm lucky I did.

Thanks, Walter, for the site and texts.

All good medicine ;^)

Unbelievable site ! This site is truly great! I was working as a wilderness guide here in Finland few years ago and i was taught by experts on nature and survival, but this site has information that i've never even heard about. I have to mention that the knife i saw in the making fire section, the Mora knife from sweden, is actually used a lot here in Finland. Good knife, i had one with me all the time when i was in the army.(cause it is so cheap, not a big loss if you lose it). Keep this site going, because it is one of the best.

(this is a copy of email I sent today) Mr. Muma, Thank you for responding. Yes, your web site is a "pearl of great price". I guess you live in Canada, right? I lived in Canada from late 1968 thru late 1973. And my forebears on my father's side ( except for maybe a few Illinois Potawatomi) came from Canada (from northern France if one goes back far 3 or 400 years). Anyhow, that is not my purpose in this email, but rather to ask your opinion about some tracks. I found what I thought were wolf tracks in south central Wisconsin. The vicinity is known to be occupied by wolves, and I think I saw 2 wolves (or the same wolf twice) within 15 miles of where I saw the tracks. The siz

Hi Walter: The web site is really impressive!! It really gets my juices flowing about doing some tracking. I used to be on your mailing list but had to change my address and didn't know how to contact you to let you know. Would you please put me back on the list, I would really like to attend some of your outings. I've been to several of Tom's classes and would really like to put in some quality dirt time. Thanks Walter Chuck Stratton

I'd just like to say that Tom Brown's books kick ass and I wish I was so lucky as to be approached by a strange old indian only to discover he wanted to spend his last years on earth teaching everything he knows. I also have a question for anyone who wouldn't mind replying. Here in Canada, there is snow all over the place (in winter at least). I was trying to do some tracking using a couple of Tom Brown books. Unfortunately, it proved very difficult (in the winter). So is snow a bad surface to track on, compared to other surfaces? Sure it's easy to follow the tracks in snow, but stuff like pressure releases I find are almost impossible to see. And what are some good and crappy surfaces to track

Interesting comment about Mors Kochanski's Bush Craft 'Bow Drill' is at odds with just about every other survival book. When I attended my Tom Brown standard course in the mid 1990's, Tom said you only do it his way because thatis what Stalking wolf taught him. Well, after reading Norther Bush Craft (not a survival book but a living book) and practicing his techniques I would say Mors ideas are superior especially for northern area. I attended a week long session with Mors K. last summer and I learned more in the the first hour than I did in a whole day at Tom Brown's course. He doesn't talk or brag, he demonstrates and is able to explain. Look at his book closer and try it. Joe

Just got in from experiencing "THE HUNTED" and was so proud to stand up and make a cheering noise at the ending credits.... There in big bold letters, TOM BROWN JR. as technical advisor.... It really was easy to see Tom all the way thru the movie. The skills and the spiritual teaching regarding the wildlife was HIS! Yes, it was the opening day and I went alone, sort of. I felt the tracking school with me, as you will, when you see the movie. I passed on info re: this web site to two very nice people in the theater. They were so impressed to know that the man who advised for the movie was indeed a real and wonderful human being who shares his skills and spirituality with those who want to learn. They were goin

This site is great. It gives me something else to look at and different angles to use while I study tracking. I've not yet taken a class from Tom Brown, but read and reread his books. In my job as a US Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer, tracking is an important aspect of my day to day operations. From finding someone who is lost to tracking the criminal. Thanks and I'll continue to use this page as another referance point.

i was just viewing toms comments on "winter survial", there is alot of wisdom in his words, being some one who sleeps out in -45 below zero and i spend enourmous amounts of time in the bush in the winter training and honeing skills and developing my newest fire starting ideas. winter is a difficult one to understand, and flow with, try taking your hands out of your mitts in -25 below zero for thirty minutes then, go into the bush with nothing, and making your fire board work. skills in one season arent good "options" in another, !! by the way, the fire board in -25 below will work, but , its all practice and skills, "practice" being the optimum word.  I have been reading with great interest the events unfolding around Marlo Morgan's offensive book. If there are film makers willing to turn her rubbish into a movie, then surely there is a film maker who would be interested in making a movie about the negative impact of her book and the reasons why its offensive. Has the film industry been approached about the possibility of making a movie about the campaign against her lies? Cheers Gayle

I have spent the time off learning new trade skills & developing new knives of a quality never offered before. Problems of slow delivery time have been remedied & service is prompt.
