Pumpdrill

The pumpdrills on this page were made by Nicholas Neddo. Photos by Walter Muma.

This pumpdrill has a round disc of heavy wood as a counterweight.

This close-up photos shows how the end of the pumpdrill has a replaceable "bit". This is so when the tip wears down, it has no effect on the size of the drill. As well, if this tip were not replaceable, eventually one would have to replace the whole shaft!

This second pumpdrill has rocks firmly tied in place to provide a counterweight. Care must be taken to find rocks of equal weight, or else the drill will be off-balance and difficult to use (it will wobble excessively).

Click on the small photo to the left to see a movie of the first pumpdrill in action. Smoke is produced and is visible in the latter half of the movie. Nick Neddo is demonstrating.
