Hand Drills

made by Allan "Bow" Beauchamp

(Equipment, text and photos on this page by Allan "Bow" Beauchamp)

Here are three different hand drills: made from sumac, mullein and burdock!

I call them "bow's" take-down hand drills.

They all fit into my pouch, and are easy to assemble and use.

Neat ah?

Note that the middle one has thumb holders.

Hand drill made from cattail. Many people find this to be very difficult to use.

Note that it is being used on a piece of Tinder Fungus.

Here is a photo of some of the many materials that can be utilized for the hand drill.

Look closely at this...it comes from my "one stick" fire board, and I am using a conventional hand drill in it!

Here you see my hand drill with "thumb holders".

The small branch on the right I have split in two, then turned it back to back, applied some cordage, and made it into a "two stick fire board", shown on the left.

Already I have had some use out of it -- works great!

This is my "milk weed hand drill" and "fungus fire board". It also has an added "cedar plug".

This system is good in wet weather.

I keep the little "end cedar plug" in my pocket as I walk the bush, then, when you stop, just insert it into your milkweed hand drill, and use a found fungus (Tinder Fungus).

Great system. As you can tell from the photo I have made many fires this way!

This photo is a close-up of the "end cedar plug" of the above hand drill.
