Poisonous Plants

If you are going to partake of the edible bounty that Nature provides, you should get to know the poisonous plants of your area.

One point of view says that you should learn all of the poisonous plants first. Then, the worst that could happen from any other plant is that you might get mildly sick if you make a mistake.

  • Water Hemlock - the most poisonous plant in North America. A single mouthful will kill you! Get to know this plant well. There are other plants that look like it that are edible! Unless you really know what you're doing, leave all plants that resemble Water Hemlock alone.

  • Poison Ivy - poisonous to touch
  • Poison Sumac - also poisonous to touch
  • Red Baneberry & White Baneberry - berries are poisonous
  • Canada Moonseed - Can be mistaken for Wild Grapes - fruits and roots poisonous. Also don't drink the water from a cut vine.
